Restaurant and Food Business Tax and Bookkeeping

Food businesses have their own record problems: delivery apps, tips, GST on food and equipment. We keep the books, run payroll, file GST and prepare the year-end return for restaurants and other food businesses. Help is available in English, Punjabi and Hindi.

Who this is for

  • Restaurants, cafes, sweet shops and takeout businesses
  • Caterers, tiffin services and food trucks
  • Businesses working out of a commissary kitchen
  • Food businesses that sell through delivery apps
  • Owners opening a second location
  • Food businesses run as a sole proprietorship or a corporation

What to bring

  • Sales reports from your point-of-sale system, not only bank deposits
  • Delivery app statements showing gross sales, commissions and adjustments
  • Bank and credit card statements for the business
  • Supplier invoices and receipts
  • Payroll records, including how card tips are paid out
  • Invoices for any equipment bought during the year
  • Your year-end inventory count

What we help with

  • Bookkeeping. Sales recorded from your sales reports, with delivery app commissions, card fees and refunds recorded as expenses.
  • Delivery app reconciliation. Each app’s statement matched to what reached the bank.
  • GST. Which of your products are taxable and which are zero-rated, and GST returns filed on schedule.
  • Payroll and tips. Staff pay, deductions and remittances, with controlled tips handled through payroll.
  • Equipment. Ovens, fridges and point-of-sale systems recorded and claimed correctly.
  • Year-end. Inventory, the numbers your return needs, and the return itself.
  • Commissary kitchens and new locations. Records and systems set up from the start.

Which return you file

A food business run as a sole proprietorship reports on the owner’s personal return. An incorporated one files a corporate T2 return. We prepare either. See corporate tax or self-employed tax.

How it works

  1. Call or request a callback. Tell us about the business, its sales channels and staff.
  2. We set up a schedule. We agree what you send and how often, and confirm the fee.
  3. Ongoing and year-end. We keep the books, run payroll, file GST and prepare the year-end return.

Fees

Fees depend on sales volume, the number of sales channels and staff, and the state of the records. We confirm the fee before we begin. See how our fees work.

Common questions

Why do you want sales reports and not just deposits?

Deposits are what is left after delivery apps and card processors take their share. Your sales are what customers paid. Recording only deposits understates sales, misses expenses and puts the GST return out.

Do I charge GST on everything I sell?

No. Most basic groceries are zero-rated. Prepared food, snacks and carbonated drinks are generally taxable. We go through your menu and products with you.

Do card tips go through payroll?

It depends on who controls them. Tips the business collects and pays out are usually controlled tips and go through payroll. We help you set this up correctly.

Can I speak to someone in Punjabi or Hindi?

Yes. Our team speaks English, Punjabi and Hindi. Tell us your preferred language when you call or request a callback.
