Who this is for
- People asked by the CRA to send receipts or documents for a claim
- People who received a letter saying their return does not match a slip
- Business owners asked for records about expenses, GST or payroll
- Anyone who received a Notice of Reassessment and does not understand it
What to bring
- The CRA letter, including every page and the reference number
- The tax return the letter is about, and its Notice of Assessment
- The receipts or records the letter asks for, as far as you have them
- Any reply you have already sent
Which kind of letter is it?
- Request for documents (review). The CRA asks you to support a claim, such as childcare, medical or moving expenses. This is the most common letter.
- Matching letter. The CRA compares your return with slips from employers, banks and others. The letter points out income or amounts that do not match.
- Notice of Reassessment. The CRA has changed your return. It shows the new amount and why.
- Audit. A wider examination of your records, usually for a business. The CRA contacts you to arrange it.
- Notice of Objection. If you disagree with an assessment, this is the formal way to dispute it. Strict deadlines apply.
What we handle
For requests for documents, matching letters and reassessments you need explained, we:
- read the letter with you and explain what it is asking for;
- sort your documents and point out anything missing;
- prepare a clear reply, with a short covering letter where it helps;
- send it to the CRA with your authorization, and explain the outcome when it arrives.
When it is bigger than a letter
For a business audit, a large reassessment or a formal objection, we look at the case first. Then we tell you honestly whether we can take it on. Some cases are better handled by a CPA firm or a tax lawyer, and we will say so. We are not an audit-defence firm.
Fees
A request for one receipt is a different job from rebuilding a year of records. We confirm the fee before we begin. See how our fees work.
Common questions
Is a letter asking for receipts an audit?
Usually not. The CRA calls it a review: a routine check of one or two items on a return. A reply with clear copies of what it asks for, sent on time, is usually the end of it.
What happens if I ignore the letter?
The CRA can disallow the claim and reassess you. Then you owe the difference plus interest. Reply by the date in the letter, or ask the CRA for more time before it passes.
Do you handle audits and objections?
We look at each case first. For a full audit or a dispute that may go to the Tax Court, we look at the case first. We will tell you honestly whether we can take it on. Some cases need a CPA firm or a tax lawyer.
