Who this is for
Children and grandchildren in Canada arranging a Super Visa for parents or grandparents, and the parents themselves. This guide covers the insurance requirement as IRCC states it, verified on the date shown. Re-check IRCC’s page before applying; requirements change.
The five questions
-
Does it meet the minimum coverage? IRCC requires minimum emergency coverage of $100,000. Ask whether the figure is per year and whether any sub-limits apply to hospital stays or specific treatments.
-
Is it valid for a full year from the date of entry? Not from the purchase date. If the arrival date moves, the policy’s start date must move with it, or the one-year requirement may not be met.
-
Does it cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation? All three. Repatriation means the cost of returning the person home, including in the event of death. Confirm each is in the policy wording.
-
Is the insurer one IRCC accepts? A Canadian insurance company. Or a foreign insurer authorized by Canada’s Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, which issued the policy while doing insurance business in Canada. Ask the insurer to confirm in writing that the policy is intended to satisfy the Super Visa requirement.
-
Is it paid, not quoted? IRCC accepts proof of a policy paid in full or in instalments with a deposit. A quote is not accepted. Keep the payment confirmation with the application.
Two more things to ask
- Pre-existing conditions. Many policies have a stability period and a medical questionnaire. An undisclosed condition can void a claim. Answer the questionnaire carefully and keep a copy.
- Each entry. IRCC says the policy must be valid for each entry to Canada and available for border officers to review on request.
- Refunds. If the visa is refused or the trip is cancelled, ask what the refund terms are before paying.
One thing many people do not realize
IRCC does not accept a quote as proof of insurance. The application needs proof that the policy is paid, either in full or by instalments with a deposit paid. Families who submit a quote to save money until the visa is approved can have the application returned. The policy has to exist before the visa does.
What to prepare
- The applicant’s date of birth and expected date of entry
- Any medical conditions and medications, for the insurer’s questionnaire, not for us
- The length of the intended stay
- The IRCC application timeline
When professional help may make sense
Buying a policy is not a guarantee of a visa, and no one can promise an approval. For questions about the visa application itself, speak to IRCC or a licensed immigration consultant.
